Seeing the tragedy of teens being killed in Merced—a city I was born and raised in—hits different. Having kids close to that age makes it hurt even more.

I’m no longer in law enforcement, but I’ll say this: if I ever went back, it would be for the kids. Always has been. Anyone who knew me back then knows my heart was with the youth and the community.

Today, as a recruiter for the Army National Guard, I’ve realized I can still make an impact—maybe even more. Guidance doesn’t always come in the same uniform.

The first teen I ever enlisted remembered me from years earlier, when I played soccer with him at the local apartments. A small moment I didn’t think twice about—but it stayed with him.

That’s the reminder: the smallest actions can redirect a life. Our teens need presence, guidance, and people who care.
