For more than 30 years, Blind Enterprises of Oregon has supplied embroidered uniform name and service tapes to the West Coast U.S. Marine Recruit and Clothing Depots. Their skilled team also produces tapes for law enforcement, search and rescue, and fire

organizations, creating meaningful employment opportunities for people who are blind, low vision, or visually impaired.

In observance and celebration of Deaf Awareness month, today we shared breakfast with our entire team, followed by a very special presentation. It was a milestone in the history of LIB. We also had the pleasure of providing a tour to a prospective deaf+blind employee who had worked for a well-known multi-billion dollar national retailer for over 12 years in a neighboring county. Throughout their tenure there, this individual has been the only deaf individual in their employment. No representation, no interpreter along the way, (therefore no voice), and no companionship for over 12 years. Nobody who stepped up and attempted to learn ASL to communicate. Unfortunately, this individual never even knew Lions Industries for the Blind in Kinston was an alternative to that recurring world of loneliness.

On the bright side, this person will soon be immersed in a world without isolation, and instead in a community environment, earning a living and gaining independence daily.
