Wearing a hoodie when traveling makes good sense when the hoodie is made of palaka...not to heavy, not too light...just right. If you put on the hood and tie it around your neck, you can keep the cold air from hitting the back of your neck. Palaka Hoodies start at $100, while palaka hoodies with flannel lining start at $125. Hoodies are available to men also.

The best thing about Merrie Monarch after all the hula and music is the emergence of clothing designs worn by people enjoying the spirit of creativity. Going beyond clothing, there are hats, leis, floral adornments...the whole nine yards of celebrating one's image.

Don't feel that you have to buy everything. Make your own leis (my leis are homemade la'i leis with yellow leaf accents), sew your own clothes and you won't be walking up to someone else wearing the same outfit, patronize local artists like Nelson Makua with notable t-shirt designs, adorn your lauhala hat with leis of flowers, foliage or feathers, or fascinators. Innovate. Break out of the box!!
