I’ve debated posting this, but after a couple recent interactions in the boutique, I feel like it needs to be said, not just for me but for everyone who owns a small business!!
I’ve had people come in and complain about my prices. I’ve had people ask if I can make something half off because another item is on sale. I’ve had people ask me to honor expired gift cards because they forgot to use them. And while these may seem like small requests, they add up…..a lot but here’s the thing. I wouldn’t walk into a grocery store, Target, Old Navy, or any other big retailer and ask them to lower the price because i didnt like what is on the tag. I wouldn’t expect them to honor an expired gift card because i forgot to use it. Their policies are their policies.
And you know what…. Our small businesses deserve that same respect. Every item in my boutique is handpicked by me. I pay for it before it ever reaches the store. I pay for shipping, supplies, and everything else that comes with owning a small business. My prices aren’t random it’s what takes to keep my doors open. I wish I could say yes to everyone. I wish I could discount everything and make exceptions every time someone asked. But if I did that, I wouldn’t have a business for very long. If something goes on sale, that’s awesome. If it’s outside your budget, I completely understand. But asking me to discount merchandise or make exceptions to my policies puts me in a really uncomfortable position. Supporting small businesses isn’t just shopping local. It’s respecting the prices, the policies, and the work that goes into every single thing we do.
I’m simply sharing my perspective on a few incidents I’ve had recently and it’s just been heavy on my heart! I also know this isn’t something only my business experiences.
Small businesses need each other to thrive. Whether it’s making a purchase or sharing a post every bit of support makes a difference. Thank you to everyone who continues to shop local and support small businesses.
Thank you truly for supporting me ❤️
