I met this man when we were 8 years old.
We dated in high school… very much under the radar from our parents. It was the late ’70s, and somehow we already knew there was something special about us.
Life pulled us in different directions for a while. We broke up, grew up, and went our separate ways… only to find each other again in our early twenties.
We built a life together before we knew whether the world around us would fully accept it.
We loved each other first and figured the rest out later.
We shared a tiny apartment with a roommate, two phone lines, and a whole lot of hope. One phone was for our friends. One was for our parents. We lived quietly, carefully, simply trying to hold onto each other.
Back then, I don’t think either of us truly believed this life together would actually happen.
But somehow… here we are.
Decades later, after all the odds, all the growing pains, all the ordinary Tuesdays, hard seasons, and beautiful moments…
he’s still the safest place I know.
And I never take lightly that one day, he’ll sit across from someone and tell them what it was like to be my husband.
