Yesterday we made the passage from Marblehead, Massachusetts to Kittery, Maine aboard Doug’s catamaran, and Mother Nature couldn’t have been more cooperative. Temperatures hovered in the mid-70s, the seas were calm, and a steady wind from astern pushed us comfortably north.

Along the way we passed historic Gloucester, rounded Cape Ann and its twin lighthouses standing watch over the coast, and crossed by the Isles of Shoals, where nine rugged islands are shared between New Hampshire and Maine.

The highlight of the day may have been spotting a shark on the surface attacking what appeared to be a small billfish—a reminder that even on the calmest days, the ocean is full of surprises.

By late afternoon we entered the Piscataqua River and picked up a mooring at Safe Harbor Kittery Point. Another spectacular day on the water, another reminder that sometimes the journey is every bit as rewarding as the destination.

What an incredible day for the Sail 250 tall ship parade.

I spent the day at anchor aboard my friend Doug’s catamaran just outside Boston Harbor along the main shipping channel, where hundreds of spectator boats bobbed and drifted in the gentle swell, their hulls creaking softly as they jockeyed for position. The salty breeze carried the distant echo of horns and cheers across the water, and the sun shimmered in bright, dancing reflections off the harbor’s surface. The weather was spectacular, with a clear blue sky stretching endlessly overhead, and the water was alive with motion as magnificent tall ships, sails billowing and rigging humming in the wind, glided gracefully through the parade route while tens of thousands of people lined the shoreline to watch.

It’s not often you get to experience history, maritime tradition, and perfect boating weather all in the same day. From our vantage point on the water, it was easy to appreciate the skill, beauty, and scale of these sailing vessels.

Days like this are a reminder of why life on the water never gets old.

The weather was spectacular, and the water was alive with activity as magnificent tall ships made their way through the parade route while tens of thousands of people lined the shoreline to watch.
It’s not often you get to experience history, maritime tradition, and perfect boating weather all in the same day. From our vantage point on the water, it was easy to appreciate the skill, beauty, and scale of these sailing vessels.
Days like this are a reminder of why life on the water never gets old.

Heading to Sail 250 in Boston from the Cape Cod Canal
