FOUNDING
Bessemer and Black is the culmination of the many years of dreaming, sketching, and experimentation on the part of Matthew Answine. After earning his degree in Industrial Design at Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, Matthew spent the next few years designing products for a highly respected corporate design house. That was a great experience but the dream of designing a
mazing footwear that began years earlier in California ultimately won out. In 2013 he stepped away from his industrial design career and devoted all his time to establishing a brand that he believed would bring something truly unique to an otherwise boring men's footwear industry. With the help and encouragement of many friends, family, and colleagues, Bessemer & Black was officially launched in 2015. Sure there are a few interesting brands out there that take chances and occasionally try something new, but for the most part it's pretty mundane and uninspiring. We've spent countless hours ensuring that each and every Bessemer & Black design is bringing something truly unique to the table. Whether it's a new way of piecing the upper, non-traditional stitching, a cool closure method, or an unexpected heel treatment, everything we offer is anything but ordinary. As we expand our product line and even consider men's accessories like belts, bags, and wallets, we promise to continue pushing the boundaries of design in inspiring new directions that any detail-conscious gentleman will genuinely appreciate. BRAND STORY
The 1880s in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, saw a small group of innovative and obsessively driven men create the world’s greatest steel empire. Their tenacious, and often ruthless, leadership and unbounded vision spurred a city of proud workers to forge the steel that built the modern world. While the mills of Pittsburgh are nearly gone, the spirit of the men that built them proudly lives on in the footwear and accessories of Bessemer & Black. Each shoe is truly handmade and superbly finished using the finest leathers, textiles, and hardware.
