Hedy Lamarr, an Austrian-born actress who fled Europe as World War II approached, escaped a dangerous marriage tied to the N•zi regime. Before coming to the U.S., Lamarr was married at 19 years old to an Austrian arms dealer, Fritz Mandl, a paranoid, overly protective arms dealer linked with fascists in Italy and N•zis in Germany.

After her father’s sudden death and with war closing in, Hedy Lamarr slipped away from Mandl’s country estate in the dead of night and made her escape to London. Unable to return to Vienna, where her mother remained, she set her sights on Hollywood.

Determined to break into film, she booked passage to the United States—on the same ship as studio mogul Louis B. Mayer. Drawing his attention during the voyage, she secured a contract with Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer before the ship even reached port.
