From One of my bestie’s Lucia Corsetti:
Yes, I've seen the news about Netflix banning corsets. I'm just too damn weary to write a full, coherent post about it. I know I'm passing up an opportunity to ride the algorithm - that's okay.
Here's my hot take: Everyone who knows me, already knows my feelings about it. First scene of Bridgerton shows the ignorant attempt to tightlace some non-tightlacing recency long stays perpetuating the same gag-worthy, boring, tired myths about how stays were used - and they made some $100 million+ from the production.
I'm the one who talked to multiple attorneys and physicians on how to go the right way about compiling an entire 400+ page book about how *properly* fitted, *responsibly* worn corsets can provide numerous health benefits. It took me 6 years and almost $12,000 CAD because I got a legal release and properly compensated every writer. Naysayers who know nothing about corsets will always say that I carelessly and irresponsibly slapped together an e-book to make a quick buck.🙄
If you're going to say that independent corsetieres and small one-woman businesses who struggle to make ends meet are the enemy, please extend 10x that same critical energy towards the production companies who rush and underpay costume departments and carelessly and irresponsibly force actors into overtightened or poorly-fitted corsets (or even sometimes worn upside down or backwards).
If you wear your shoes too small or on the opposite feet, of course they're going to hurt. Please practice some common sense.
My add on down here: they are filming these in minutes from some of my favorite corset makers and I know many who would jump and move to be closer at the chance to properly fit corsets for these events, but no one asked for that. They wanted cheap corsets and underfunded and costume budgets despite the revenue these things bring in.
Period pieces look better with period somewhat accuracy, but even better with comfortable actors.
When I wear my corset I can eat and dance and move just fine.
