The Crossing, also known as the Rock Chalk CafΓ©, opened in 1923 and served the Lawrence and KU community for 85 years.

Over its history, the building was home to several businesses and names.

During World War II, the business catered to nearby military barracks. In the decades that followed, it became a popular student hangout known for its relaxed atmosphere, porch seating, and bar games.

The Crossing was also known for its Stop Day Eve parties. Because of its location, many students considered it the β€œpre-game” bar.

In 1965, the menu included:
β€” $1 pitchers
β€” 25Β’ draughts
β€” Free popcorn

The Crossing came under new ownership in 2006. In 2008, after 85 years, the bar closed and the building was demolished to make way for The Oread.

Construction on The Oread began in 2008, and the hotel opened in 2010.

Soon, Jayhawks will return to Lawrence for another school year on Mount Oread.

The 2026-2027 school year marks 160 years since the University of Kansas opened in 1866. That year, KU welcomed 55 students and four faculty members to Old North College on Mount Oread.

To those arriving for the first time, welcome to Lawrence. To those returning, welcome back.

There’s no place like Kansas.

The construction of the new David Booth Kansas Memorial Stadium, phase by phase.

As of July 2026, construction continues on the largest capital project in University of Kansas history.

Phase 1 rebuilt the southwest, west, and north sides of the stadium, adding new seating, concourses, premium spaces, fan amenities, and an expanded Anderson Family Football Complex. It was completed in time for Kansas football to return to the stadium for the 2025 season.

Phase 2 is reconstructing the east side, adding a new south grandstand, and completing the surrounding Gateway District.

Once complete, Kansas will have an entirely new football stadium on the historic site where Memorial Stadium first opened in 1921.

On October 10, 1992, 52,000 fans packed Memorial Stadium, with another 7,000 watching from the hill behind the south end zone.

The crowd finished 3,000 short of the school record set against K-State in 1973.

Led by head coach Glen Mason, Kansas defeated K-State.
