Due to the overwhelming response and request from my customers, I have created a flyer to view or download, condensing the information on choosing a bridal seamstress. Feel free to share with any future bride you know. Thank you!

Public Service Announcement for Future Brides

Over the past several months, 2026 has been one of the most difficult years I’ve experienced when it comes to bridal alterations.

Since early March, I have had six brides come to me after their gowns had already been altered by someone else—and unfortunately, the alterations had been done incorrectly. Of those six gowns, I was able to successfully rework and save five. Sadly, the sixth gown was beyond repair.

These dresses ranged in price from $2,200 to $6,000. Not only had these brides already paid someone else for alterations, but they then had to pay again to have the work corrected. In one heartbreaking case, the gown simply could not be saved.

My purpose in sharing this isn’t to criticize anyone. It is to help future brides avoid the stress, expense, and disappointment that can come from choosing someone who may not have the specialized experience that bridal alterations require.

Before You Choose a Bridal Seamstress, Ask These Questions:

• How much bridal alteration experience do you have?
How many years have you been altering bridal gowns, and approximately how many have you completed?
• How were you trained?
Were you professionally mentored or formally trained, or are you self-taught?
• How many appointments should I expect?
• What is your typical timeline?
• What is your general price range?
• Can you provide recent references?
This is especially important because bridal gown styles, fabrics, lace, and construction techniques continue to evolve.

A Little About My Experience

I have been specializing in bridal gown alterations for more than 40 years.
When I was in my early twenties, I was fortunate to spend seven years apprenticing under a master bridal seamstress who oversaw alterations for one of the area’s most respected bridal salons. She accepted me as her apprentice because I already had strong sewing skills and believed I had the potential to become an accomplished bridal seamstress.
The knowledge, techniques, and attention to detail she passed on to me have been invaluable throughout my career.

Last year alone, I altered 65 bridal gowns, in addition to numerous bridesmaid dresses and mother-of-the-bride and mother-of-the-groom gowns.

My Alteration Process

Most brides only need two appointments:
• An initial fitting.
• A final fitting after the alterations are complete.
If I feel additional fittings will be necessary, I can usually determine that during the first appointment.

I prefer to receive bridal gowns up to six months before the wedding, but I often accommodate brides with much shorter timelines when my schedule allows. If a bride plans to lose weight before her wedding, I typically schedule her alterations closer to the wedding date to achieve the best possible fit.

How Alteration Costs Are Determined

I can usually provide a ballpark estimate during the initial fitting. However, the final cost depends on the amount and complexity of the work involved.
Some of the factors include:
• How the gown was originally constructed, including the stitch density, which affects how difficult it is to carefully take the gown apart.
• Whether beadwork, lace, or appliqués must be removed and replaced.
• The type of hem required and the number of layers involved.
• The style of bustle needed—traditional, French, or ballroom.
• Whether gussets or other structural alterations are needed to enlarge the gown.
• Many other construction details that are unique to each dress.
No two bridal gowns are exactly alike, which is why every alteration is unique.

My Hope

If you’re a future bride—or if you know someone who is—I hope you’ll share this information.
Every bride has the right to choose the seamstress who is the best fit for her. Whether you choose me or someone else, I simply encourage you to ask the right questions before trusting someone with one of the most important garments you’ll ever wear.
