ππΏ FALL PLANT FACTS YOU MIGHT NOT KNOW! πΏπ
Fall is officially here, but here in Louisiana Mother Nature clearly hasn't gotten the memo yet. πβοΈ
Even while we're still dealing with warm days, your plants already know the seasons are changing! Here are a few things you may not know:
π Plants notice fall before we do.
Shorter days can signal seasonal changes to plants even when it still feels like summer outside.
π§ Your plants may start drinking less.
Less daylight can mean slower growth and slower water use. That summer watering schedule may suddenly be TOO MUCH.
βοΈ Watch those windows!
The sun sits lower in the sky during fall, which can change where direct sunlight hits inside your home. A plant that was perfectly happy all summer may suddenly be getting stronger direct sun.
π± Fall can be fantastic for root growth.
For many outdoor plants, cooler air means less heat stress while the soil can stay warm enough for roots to continue establishing.
πͺ΄ Yellow leaves don't automatically mean your plant needs fertilizer.
Changes in light, watering, temperature, normal leaf aging and root health can all cause yellowing.
π§ͺ Don't try to force growth with extra fertilizer.
If your plant naturally slows down because it's receiving less light, piling on fertilizer isn't necessarily going to make it grow faster.
π CHECK YOUR PLANTS BEFORE BRINGING THEM INSIDE!
Spider mites, scale, mealybugs and other little hitchhikers would LOVE a free ride into your nice warm house. π Inspect them carefully and consider keeping newcomers away from the rest of your collection at first.
π‘οΈ A plant doesn't have to freeze to suffer cold damage.
Many tropical plants can become stressed at temperatures well ABOVE freezing.
βοΈ And don't automatically start cutting everything back!
Some plants shouldn't be heavily pruned in fall. Depending on the plant, you could remove future flower buds or encourage tender new growth right before colder weather arrives.
πΏπ Fall plant care isn't about following a calendar β it's about watching what your plants are telling you.
I'll be sharing more fall plant tips as our weather starts changing!
