A favorite question for quilt instructors is “What type of Sewing Machine do you use?" My answer is that I use several. My main machine is a Babylock Solaris-3 however I have a 730 BERNINA as a back up. I also had a Babylock Tiara- a dedicated mid arm for quilting only. I mainly use the Solaris, a top of the line digital sewing and embroidery machine....

Welcome to the SECOND month of Zebra Pattern's NEW "Happy Holidays!" online Block of the Month program. Each month on the first Tuesday we will feature the monthly block. There will be a button to link you to our website to download the pattern that month for only $1.00. If you miss a month or start the program late, the pattern will still be available at its regular price of $2.50. Every month we will include tips and tricks and extra things that can be done to enhance or make the project easier. Below you will see the overall quilt and in the following section we will get into specifics. So let's get started on this month's block!

February

We will continue the calendar year with - February. If you missed the previous block just go back in the blog history. The feature image is of a vine covered Valentine Heart. Look below to see what the block looks like put together with cotton fabrics. I chose a light background with matching corners to my design. My background will be the same for all twelve blocks. Your download will include a full size pattern, a full size positioning sheet and directions to create the background square in square block to place the heart atop.

JANUARY BOM

January Block of the Month

Welcome to the very FIRST month of Zebra Pattern's NEW "Happy Holidays!" online Block of the Month program. So let's get started!

January
We will start at the beginning of the calendar year - January. The feature image is of a wintery snowflake. Look below to see what the block looks like put together with cotton fabrics. I chose a light background with matching corners to my design. My background will be the same for all twelve blocks. Your download will include a full size pattern, a positioning sheet and directions to create the background square in square block to place the snowflake atop.

Getting Started: Unlike other months, I would suggest that you cut all of your 10" background squares ahead of time to ensure you have enough fabric for all of the blocks if you want backgrounds to match, and for general productivity. Once you have the twelve backgrounds cut you will need one per month for the monthly block. Color choices are personal choices, of course. At the end of this posting I will include a suggestion of some different color combinations for the overall quilt to spark your creativity.

Step one each month: Each month you will start by taking one 10" background square and choosing your corner triangles. (two 8" squares cut in half diagonally.) Make the 14" square in a square background block. Choose your design element fabrics, in January it will be a color for your snowflake and corners.

Preparing applique: Each month you will make your pattern pieces from the provided pattern sheet. Apply fusible webbing to the back of each fabric. (FREE Demonstration available here: Zebra Applique Demo) I use Steam-A-Seam Lite 2® by the Warm Company. I have felt for over 20 years it is the very best product on the market for applique. Always use a pressing sheet to protect your iron and ironing surface. I use "The Fat Goddess Sheet" by The Attached Company.

Assembly: After fabrics are chosen, cut, and fused, use your positioning sheet to position your applique onto your background.

Raw Edge Quilting: Using a tear away stabilizer behind your applique, raw edge sew with a zig zag or buttonhole stitch your seasonal applique design.

Extra Ideas: To make your snowflake even "cooler" you could add opalescent glitter or shimmery beading to make it look icy!

Finishing: Remove tear away stabilizer and set block aside until final assembly.

Come back next month on the first Tuesday to get see and download next month’s

How to Help Lahaina Fire victims

Aloha Quilts Donation Drive
The following is information for quilters to help out fire victims of the recent tragic fires in Lahaina. This post below was copied from a long time Zebra Patterns Quilt shop customer and friend…Marilyn from The Maui Quilt Shop on Maui in Hawaii:
Ahalo! Thank You! Arigato! Merci! Gracias! for your tremendous support for our Aloha Quilts Donation Drive. Your response has been overwhelming!! As kindred spirits, I know how much time, effort, expense & especially the TLC that goes into making quilts. These handmade quilts are special and were made with loving hands. Your donated quilts will be distributed wisely to those affected by this horrible fire. These quilts will give them comfort and help them heal as they try to overcome this tragedy.
Thank you for caring about Maui!
With Love and Aloha,
Marilyn.,

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS:
What sizes are needed?
At this time, we are accepting all new finished quilts, any size. Preferably, 50"x 60" or larger.

Cotton would be best because of our warm, tropical climate.
