Loose braid is what causes most of the headaches people blame on braid.

It has to go on under real tension or it buries into itself on the first hard cast and you’re picking at a nest on the pier. Keep steady pressure the whole way and it lays flat and behaves for a couple of seasons.

Salt and sand are what actually kill a reel, and both get past unsealed housings on a bay boat.

They swim, the striper takes it, and you bring it up slow like a chicken neck. Net at the surface, not a lift. Same mistake people make crabbing.

Water circulation in a minnow bucket is what keeps them going. No bucket, we'll bag them and they'll hold on ice about two hours.

If you're driving an hour to the spot, plan for that before you pull out of the lot.

Color is preference. Strand count is not.

Four strand grips and takes abrasion better around wrecks and rock. Eight is smoother through the guides, so it casts farther and suits open water bottom fishing.

Pick for where you're fishing, then pick whatever color you like.

A 3000 size reel with a 7 foot medium heavy rod covers most of what you'll do around here.

That's the part worth writing down before you shop. Not the brand, the specs. Once you know what size and action you need, the wall of options gets a lot smaller and you can compare what you're actually paying for.

The gear is the easy part.

Learn one knot before your first trip and practice it at the kitchen table. Most beginners lose their first decent fish at the connection, not the rod. Rinse the reel with fresh water when you get home and the setup lasts years.
