The Kith (friends and customers):

I became a business by accident. Years ago as I stretched my creative legs and fell more in love with the worlds of knitting and crochet I began making gifts for friends and family, then people began asking if I could make things for them too, next friends of friends would ask and so before I knew it and without planning I had myself little business. In the be

ginning I sold my items at local craft fairs and small shops, then as the demand grew I moved to an online presence usnig Etsy (which I no longer use) and facebook. I have now been making custom orders and selling my creations for well over a decade. It is because of the support from customers, friends and family that I have made it this far. The Kin (family):

At the heart of why I do what I do is the legacy I received from the women in my family who were involved in the fabric arts, my mother and grandmothers quilted, sewed and crocheted. My grandmother taught me to crochet when I was a little girl and my mom has coached me in sewing over the years (with some help along the way from a fellow employee at former job). Then as an adult I added knitting along with dabbling in embroidery. I'm in love with the heritage these women have passed on to me. I have sweet memories of watching them create something out of fabric and yarn and am honored to be following in thier footsteps by continuing these useful skills and art form.

Today I'm doing repair and restoration work on a vintage granny square afghan. We found this blanket while going through family keepsakes. It was most likely made by one of my grandmothers (one of which taught me to crochet).

What surprised me is that the squares are joined with what looks like embroidery floss or thick cotton thread! These days the squares are usually joined using the same yarn they were crocheted with.

I'm going to sew the squares back together the way they were originally joined.

Coffee and crochet lessons.

I've been meeting with my student at Analog Coffee & Records for several months now. And it's past time for me to give them a shout out. It has been the perfect background for me meet up with my student and pass on this skill.

The shop is such a nice fit for yarn, crochet hooks, knitting needles and the laid back pace of knitting and crochet.

They've done a great job at creating a space that feels like a welcoming living room, filled with details to feed the creative spirit and calm the mind. Records and books to peruse or buy, local art on the walls, music playing at just the right volume, the smell of wonderful coffee and the low hum of conversation all come together for the quintessential retro coffee shop vibe.

It's a place to sit amongst books, records, plants and art to read, listen to music, let your mind wander or be inspired. It's definitely a welcome throwback and a atmosphere of warm nostalgia.

Think of the coffee shops during 80's and early 90's. (Places like Twice Told Coffee House in Louisville on Bardstown Rd. If you are from the area).

And beyond the environment, the baristas have been the epitome of excellent service every single time!

Today I thought I would share with you a piece that I just dragged out of “timeout”.

I’ve mentioned pieces having to be put in timeout before.

Those are the pieces that have either become too frustrating, too time-consuming, or I’ve lost interest in or for some other reason get put aside.

This is one of those pieces.

I have worked on it, taken it apart and worked on it again.

I brought it out of timeout today, to disassemble it so I can once again start over.

The picture you see covers the top of a queen size bed, and it’s not finished yet! 

This is a crochet cabled blanket that has been on my “work in progress” list for over two years now I believe.

Maybe third time is a charm!

Today, I am finding comfort in my craft and I felt compelled to share.

I’ve talked a little bit about my journey through cancer and now post treatment recovery.

I often debate on posting about it because I am not seeking drama, nor is that the sum of who I am.

However, it is a part of my life and so today I’ve decided to talk about it.

My body can be unpredictable and unreliable these days.

Sometimes, that combination can make me feel defeated. I struggle against the limitations that the hard days present and the unpredictability of knowing how I will feel day to day.

Today has been one of those days. 

I had a moment this morning, where I was upset and frustrated about my circumstances.

The message from Church this morning, got me pointed in the right direction. My focus shifted from what I could not do to what I could do, from frustration to thankfulness, bad to good, from myself to God. 

I realized I can take advantage of God’s creation by being still in it’s presence and using my God given ability to create and distract my mind. 

So now I sit here with my needles in hand and the medicine of God‘s creation around me. These things coming together to point me back to my creator.

My spirit is soothed and my mind is occupied with peace and gratitude.

So many times this ability that God has given me has gone far beyond simply being a little business. Over the years it has served as a way to connect with others, a resource for giftgiving and as therapy, a blessed distraction. To me those are the most valuable aspects of it.

And I am thankful.

Just look at this fun fabric I picked up at Little Golden Fox in Madison.
I'm excited to see how cute it will be as a liner for the bag I'm working on.
While I'm thinking about the fabric I want to once again give a shout out to the shop. Whenever I visit the shop my creative spirit lights up!
