We first sung Happy Birthday, we first fried chicken, we first slapped high fives. We invented bourbon, bluegrass music, and the motherfreaking Kentucky Derby. We birthed cool with Clooney, Depp, and Hunter S. We nurtured beauty with Loretta Lynn, all the Judds and Diane Sawyer. We championed sport with Ali, Sea Biscuit, and Rondo. We are the real deal. We're Kentucky.

We’re saddened to hear about the passing of Wendell Berry, one of Kentucky’s most important voices.

Wendell had a deep impact on all of us who were willing to open our eyes and see. Farmers, thinkers, artists, so many of us are better because of him.

Nobody led by example the way he did. He stood for what he was standing on, fearlessly, for 92 years. Thank you Wendell.

Our hearts go out to his family and to everyone who will carry on his message and his work.

The best way to honor Wendell is to do what he’d want us to do anyway. Slow down. Read more. Plant and maintain a tree. Open your eyes and see. Meet your neighbors, and help them.
