$500 billion is lost each year because of under-wearing and failure to recycle clothes
The worst aspect of throw-away culture is that the vast majority of clothes tossed each year are not recycled. Globally, just 12% of the material used for clothing ends up being recycled. Much of the problem comes down to the materials our clothes are made from and the inadequate technologies to recycle them. The fabrics are made from problematic blends of natural yarns, man-made filaments, plastics, and metals, according to Earth.org.
I was guilty of this too, then I started shopping at thrift stores, finding better fabrics and returning to my sewing machine to make something new. Weird fabric, polyester and acryllic is difficult to work with, but instead I send it to Trashie - a textile recycling company.
Consider what you buy - there are a lot of quick, inexpensive options that seem irresistible, until you add the cost of disposal.
Wear vintage, thrifted, and upcycled for the win!
