It is said the Wayuu learned to weave thanks to a mythical spider called Walekeru. This spider would create magical pieces using thread from her mouth. She is the one that taught all Wayuu women to crochet, crocheting hammocks to sleep in, belts for men, shoes, bracelets and Wayuu bags of all different sizes and crochet methods to be used for different purposes.
Today, the skill of crocheting has become the main source of income for the Wayuu community.

Wayuu bags are one of the most famous handicrafts in Colombia and although they are originally from the La Guajira region, they can be seen all over the country. Here are some interesting facts about these beautiful crafts:⠀

✔️The weaving techniques come from the Wayuu indigenous ancestors and the dedicated work of making them corresponds to the women of the community and has been transmitted from generation to generation.⠀
✔️Women have to combine weaving with raising their children and household tasks, which is why it can take them up to 2 months to make one bag.⠀
✔️The more skilled the women are at weaving, the more prestige they will have in their clan.⠀
✔️The figures weaved into the bags are called Kaanás and represent the community's clans and symbology.

💕Each Wayuu mother teaches her daughter how to weave and crochet, keeping the tradition as alive and vibrant as ever. To the Wayuu, weaving is a symbol of wisdom, intelligence, and creativity. As young Wayuu women come of age, they learn to create Mochilas Wayuu bags.👩‍👧
Wayuu women work full days while weaving their Wayuu bags and can take up to a full month to complete one single bag.
