As of March 2026, Italian workers can take up to three days of paid emergency leave each year to care for a seriously ill pet. To qualify, employees must provide a veterinary certificate confirming the animal needs urgent care, and the pet must be officially registered and microchipped. The move builds on a landmark 2017 court case in Rome, where a university employee successfully argued that caring for her sick dog was a legal responsibility, not a personal convenience. Animal welfare groups have praised the change, saying no one should have to choose between their job and the well being of a suffering animal. The decision is already sparking conversations in other countries about whether pets should be treated more like family under labor laws.
What once sounded like an unusual workplace request is now a legal right in Italy.
