Microplastic fibres can come from a variety of sources, clothing being one of them. This tiny particles have adverse health effects on humans as they get ingested by marine life and then by us. Microplastics absorb and give off chemicals and harmful pollutants. Each cycle of a washing machine can release more than 700.000 plastic fibres into the environment. And it doesn’t matter if the garments are made from virgin or recycled polyester, they both contribute to microplastic pollution. See some short term solutions in the gallery above. A long term solution is to ask your local government representatives to limit/regulate the amount of synthetic textiles produced and sold in your country.
