Legend has it, Empress Xi Ling-Shi was enjoying afternoon tea when a silkworm cocoon fell into her teacup and unraveled to reveal a single, glimmering thread. The princess, now known as the Goddess of the Silkworm and Silkworm Mother, then went on to develop sericulture, the science of silk production. The rigorous processes of silkworm cultivation, fiber reeling, strength testing, and weaving remained China’s best kept state secret and a mystery to the world for nearly 3,000 years.
