Gearing up for a San Francisco show this weekend, it's been a while! The Crystal Fair in Golden Gate Park.

Following it up with a southwest campervan road trip to visit friends and find more treasures to work with in the studio.

Man o man do I like hiking. I think it's remarkable when you'd do the same stuff in your free time as you'd do for work. Whether it be building houses, designing some cool programs, or any other thing that might keep you going. Mine just happens to be hiking.

When I'm looking for texture and pattern inspiration, nature is my go-to for new ideas.

Such as this petrified sandstone I found along the Colorado River. I hopped right over it on the walk down, but the light hit it just perfectly on the way up to show its previous existence as a shallow sea bottom, layering up over time with the actions of waves and currents.

I still love working with glass, perhaps more than any other medium.

Showing the natural beauty of stones is extremely gratifying, but glass feels much more like alchemy. You can mix different colors, patterns, opacity, heat and time to make some truly wild specimens.

This patterned pair has dichroic metals fused to the back, with a clear layer over the top. I left the rectangular glass cutouts in the kiln long enough for them to bead up into droplets, much the same way water does on flower petals.

The origin of the heart symbol?

There's a few theories. One is that it came from the heart shape itself- or perhaps some other body parts (breasts or buttocks) that it resembles.

Another theory is that it came from the Greek colony of Cyrene on the North African coast. They were a major producer of a plant in the fennel family called silphium. What was this plant used for? A spice, medicine and as a form of birth control. The leaves resemble the modern heart shape and their local coins displayed this heart shape. The plant was well loved and went extinct in the first century AD.

The symbol itself gained more popularity in its use on playing card decks, as well as by St. Valentine's cards in the 19th century.

Two nesting red-shouldered hawks in their favorite perch high up in a neighbor's tree. Collecting twigs to build a nest nearby.

Unlike their slightly larger cousins the red tailed hawks, these raptors prefer dense woodlands and rarely soar higher above the treetops, taking acrobatic flight paths through the canopy instead.
