Just woke up to the smell of creosote and fresh rain and it has me feeling smiley inside.

This girl was not made for such extreme summer heat .

Been feeling sad? Me too. Let’s just feel it together.

A day late, but I think I needed a minute to understand why losing Dolly feels so enormous. I haven’t felt this kind of grief over the loss of a public figure since David Bowie, someone whose presence in the world felt so singular that it was almost impossible to imagine the world without them. Dolly was one of those people.

Dolly brought everyone together. Gay people, trans people, rednecks, MAGA voters, leftists—people who had been taught to believe they hated one another all loved Dolly. To go to a Dolly concert was to enter a room filled with all of those people, peacefully existing together beneath her light.

She stood firmly in her beliefs, but she never used them to humiliate anyone. She didn’t confuse conviction with cruelty. She never made people feel that they had to be exactly like her to be worthy of her love.

And her life was every bit as generous as her words. She didn’t simply talk about kindness, faith and service, she lived them. She walked the tenets of what she believed and did more for humanity than most of us could ever dream of doing.

Living in the desert has made me understand this more and more. There are probably more MAGA voters here than liberals, but when I meet people as human beings, not as political identities most are kind. Most help their neighbors. Most take care of one another when it really matters.

That doesn’t mean our differences aren’t real or that we shouldn’t stand up for what we believe. But fighting people who don’t see the world exactly as I do will never create the peace I want this world to experience.

If we could begin with our shared humanity, perhaps we could stop allowing powerful people to convince us that our neighbors are our enemies. Because when ordinary people are divided, nobody wins except the people who benefit from keeping us that way. Dolly showed us another way.

Stand for something without losing your tenderness. Lead with love whenever you can.Bring people together. Leave the world more generous than you found it.

Be more like Dolly. Every single day. 🤍

Please respect my privacy during this difficult time as I attempt to accept that my 12 days in France are over. My body is here. My soul is still drinking coffee somewhere in the countryside.

I’m back. At least, my body is.

My soul is still somewhere in the French countryside wandering through old stone villages, eating fresh bread, and trying to figure out how to make every ordinary morning feel a little more romantic.

In the meantime, prepare yourselves for many more France photo dumps over the next week.

It’s our last day in the French countryside, and tonight we’re having dinner at a restaurant that is quite literally someone’s country home. A family cooks for everyone, using beautiful local ingredients, and dinner is served outside on their patio.

Being here has made me understand how deeply I’m craving a simpler, more peaceful way of living. Even more than I already did before I left.

The food is fresh and close to where it comes from. Farms are everywhere. Meals take time. People sit outside. Things feel less rushed, less complicated, less consumed by the constant noise we’ve somehow gotten used to at home.

Of course France isn’t perfect. People here have problems. They disagree about politics. Life is life everywhere.

Being away has made me realize how much tension I carry from living in America right now. Everything feels so loud. The politics. The arguing. The outrage. The endless information. Even something as basic as feeding ourselves can somehow feel complicated.

I met an American couple here who moved from D.C. and now speak fluent French. They said something that stuck with me: of course people argue and disagree here too, but it doesn’t seem to permeate everyday life at quite the same level.

And maybe that’s what I’m responding to.

I just want life to feel a little easier. A little quieter. A little more human.

I want good food grown nearby. Long dinners outside. Walks. Friends around the table. Beauty for no particular reason. More time actually living and less time being told what I should be afraid of, angry about, buying, fixing or becoming.

Travel makes you appreciate so much about home.

But sometimes it also shows you what you’ve been missing.

I leave for France in three days, and somehow work and life have suddenly become insanely busy. My health hasn’t been great, my to-do list is unhinged, and I can feel a crash waiting in the wings if I’m not careful.

So I’m doing my best to move slowly and intentionally—even when everything around me is telling me to speed up. Taking one thing at a time, resting when I can, and trying not to let the chaos get the best of me. The goal is to actually make it to France with my nervous system and sense of humor intact.
