recent happenings in our knitwear studio — mainly some of our favorite moments from last month

a little more behind the scenes of our custom pink dress for Kendall Jenner, revisiting some of my mom’s old knitting techniques, experimenting with new yarns and textures, and finding ways to turn leftover swatches into something cute and whimsical - upcyclingg bb !

we’ve also been bringing back some old favorites and making a few new things for our one day pop up on Fairfax, November 14th !

After sharing a bit about my mama’s Grinch era, we wanted to show what we actually mean when we say we’re pulling some of those old knitting ideas into new sweaters!

Not recreating for now lol just going back through the techniques, shapes and feel good little details she was playing with 2 decades ago and seeing what feels right to us today.

Short rows, shaggy textures, stripes following the raglan, elongated ribs (new fav neckline), chevrons.

A few are still very much in development, which is prob our favorite part!

We’ll have some of the new samples with us at our LA pop-up on Nov. 14th if you want to see + feel them in person! Yay! (Rsvp link is in the bio).

A little trip back into my mom’s Grinch era for the first sweaters we’re developing this fall!

Not recreating anything, just going back to some of the textures, techniques, shapes and color that came out of that period of her work, and seeing what those ideas look like at Suss now.

Still very much in development and that’s prob our favorite part!

And if there’s a detail from one of the Grinch sweaters you remember we would love to hear it!

Recent happenings in our Los Angeles knitwear studio - some fall sweater samples, reorganizing the yarn wall, winding and hand knitting chunky wool, swatch clean out, and pulling from a few pieces in the Suss Design archive. We are really ready for sweater season so fingers crossed this heatwave passes soon lol

Basically our knit version of that old sweatshirt you refuse to get rid of.

It’s one size (unisex) and oversized, but the chunky cotton (from how we loom it) is so soft and sponge-like that it hangs more like an old sweatshirt than a heavy sweater. Big body, baggy armholes, very much meant to feel off duty.

And our tiny hand-loomed SUSS logo stitched at the cuff because it really has become our little gem of a large logo sweater.

Baby blue is in the studio now, black is being sampled next — what color would you want to see this in?

Obsessing over tiny color variations is pretty soothing lol. Maybe The Archive Finish was already there, but it’s fun to feel like you are turning it up a notch (JUST slightly). A little more grey, a little more contrast around the distressing, another layer of dye - nothing dramatic, just enough that it felt right.

Every sweater is distressed and dyed by hand in our Los Angeles studio, which means no two finishes will ever be exactly alike. The dye settles differently into nubs of the slub cotton, around the seams and into each distressed area every time. This is where we’ve been landing!

the hand stitched shrug - one shape in three color stories, hand loomed in cotton + lycra (wish you could feel this soft/stretchy textile combo !). each knit shrug is finished with contrast whip stitching by hand.

the part before the finished part.

digging through the Suss Design early 2000s archive, drawing, pulling yarn, making tiny yarn bows (how my mom taught me lol), swatching (for the weight and hand/feel of the knit), he weight and hand/feel of the piece before it’skpattern making (lots of math), sampling, changing things, trying again.

basically the part where the studio gets fun messy and we figure out what works.

SUSS TOPS group is almost complete, for knits more than just a traditional sweater (even though we love those too).
