Rakfeldt Residence. Santa Monica, CA
The project brief was to create a sliding "art" wall panel to provide privacy between the kitchen and the dining room. It was vital to integrate the clients Japanese heritage into the design. This interior installation echoed the details utilized for the exterior Kumiko panels. One of the iconic cultural symbols used was the crane, a mystical creature that represents good fortune and longevity. The exterior installation integrated a portion of the wing of the crane for the artwork but in the interior sliding door panel a complete crane is celebrated. The installation integrates a 3 dimensional layered Kumiko pattern into lightweight balsa wood wall panels with programable backlit LED lighting.
