Chrome tanning accounts for over 90% of the worldโ€™s leather production, and depending on the Tannery between 50 and 250 chemicals are used per leather piece.
These chemicals are used to burn the hair, bleach the hide, make the leather shine, dye, preserve or soften it more quicklyโ€ฆ
Some of these chemicals are known to be carcinogenic and very hard to treat once mix with water.
This is why 95% of tanneries in the United States have relocated their operations overseas.
