These past two days have been soo tough. And all I can think about is my grandmother. She was an immigrant, she was a garment worker, she was a single mother and was one of the strongest persons I have ever met. She overcame so much in her lifetime, And yet she remained resilient and strong till the day she passed. She was religious and taught me all about spirituality and she brought our Mexican traditions into our family. Even though she was a catholic woman, she was still very open minded, she didn’t judge people based on their race nor if they were gay or straight. I loved that about her. She was a kind woman but also always stood up for herself. She didn’t take s**t from anyone. I’m making this post because I wanted to thank her for having the courage to come into this country illegally, risking her life and leaving everything behind because she believed America would be a better place for her and her 11 kids. She came during the Reagan administration and brought the rest of her her family throughout the years all while working as a garment worker. Looking back at her courage and strength, I admire her so much. Once she became legal through the Reagan immigration reform, she later became an American citizen and instilled voting in my family. I remember having to translate ballots for her and going to the polls with her so she can cast her vote. What she did for our family I will never forget. I will always remember where I came from. And because of her I am able to accomplish my American dream.
This is one of the reasons why I believe so many others should have the opportunity to come to this country and build a future for their family. Not all immigrants are criminals. The majority of them just seek for a better life for their family.

“I believe in the idea of amnesty for those who have put down roots and lived here, even though sometime back they may have entered illegally,” Ronald Reagan said in 1984.
