Help us meet our $15k Goal in the next 17 hours and your dollar will be matched!

We need your help to continue supporting women in India during the COVID-19 health crisis. We have an urgent need for funds to help ensure Anchal can continue employing 180 women. Majority of Anchal artisans continue to be the breadwinner in the family due to their husbands’ job loss or instability.

Anchal Senior Artisan, Madina, shared, “Due to regular work from Anchal, I have been able to manage our home during this challenging time while my husband has not been working.”

By investing in individual women and needed production materials, you are investing in an entire community and breaking the cycle of gender inequality and exploitation.

From the bottom of our hearts, thank you for helping us reach this major milestone and for designing change for women in India and Kentucky.

COVID-19 Relief: Grocery Kit Donations

Just over a month ago, together we raised $3,530 to help sponsor relief grocery kits for the Anchal artisans in India. Over the past week, our amazing management team distributed over 160 kits! The contents of a single kit are full of pantry staples such as chickpeas, lentils, turmeric, oils, and peanuts which can help sustain a family of 4 for over a month and a half. With this kit, families can now save the extra funds for fresh vegetables and other necessities for their families. Read more our the blog.

Meanings behind the Marigold...

• In the Middle Ages, marigolds were frequently carried as love charms – you would carry a marigold if you were trying to attract someone new!

• Marigolds belong to an ancient tradition in Mexico that extends back to the Aztec people who believed the blossoms to be sacred. Today, marigolds play an important role in Dia de los Mu***os celebrations. The flowers, which are believed to draw in spirits with their fragrance and bright colors, decorate gravesites, altars, and shrines.

• Once known as “Mary’s Gold,” early Christians had a tradition of placing flowers on Mary’s altar as an offering instead of coins.

• Marigold blooms are also used in Hindu religious ceremonies & weddings as a symbol of positive energy, brightness & the ideal couple, often taking shape as beautiful garlands.

• In Buddhism, garlands of yellow and golden marigolds are strung together and used as offerings and adornments in temples, at altars, and near statues of the Buddha. Used in conjunction with lotus flowers, marigolds are used to worship Buddha.

• In ancient Egypt and Greece, marigolds symbolized healing and restoration because both ancient cultures valued marigolds for their healing properties. They used them to soothe pain, heal sores, and to treat wounds. They also added them to their foods and drinks for additional flavor and color.

If you have followed us for a while, you probably have heard us mention that our products are made of 100% GOTS Certified Organic Cotton. If you aren't sure what exactly that means, you are not alone! In our series #AnchalTransparency, we want to educate our followers and customers on sustainable fashion and how Anchal is doing our part.

GOTS stands for Global Organic Textile Standard and it is an internationally recognized certification. GOTS requires that textile manufacturers follow very specific environmental criteria and social criteria. For example, no chemicals can be used which have been shown to harm humans or the environment at any stage of the production process. Also worker safety and worker rights issues are a top priority - no child or slave labor and a certain minimal level of safe working conditions must be met. To carry the GOTS label "organic" a textile must must contain at least 95% certified organic fibers — ours are 100%.

As a consumer, we have an incredible amount of power with our purchase decisions. Thank you for supporting us on our journey of #DesigningChange!

Today is #WorldFairTradeDay! We are proud to be a member of the Fair Trade Federation which defines fair trade as "an approach to business and to development based on dialogue, transparency, and respect that seeks to create greater equity in the international trading system."

In honor of today, we're sharing 5 reasons why fair trade costs more:

1. Handmade: On average it will take an artisan 11-14 days to make a beautiful quilt with around 200 lines of stitching.

2. Time: No mass production machinery is involved. Therefore, many days can be spent crafting just one piece.

3. Materials: By sourcing vintage and natural materials, we are able to address the environmental exploits of the fashion industry head on.

4. Wages: Artisans make 25%-100% more money than they did in the prior to working with Anchal and are able to support themselves and their families through safe and dignified employment.

5. Design Process: We conduct design workshops to teach skills that include kantha hand-quilting, machine tailoring and hand dyeing. Beyond these job skills, these artisans learn how to use self expression in the pieces they create.

So much time, effort, and love goes into each Anchal piece. Thank you for supporting us in our pursuit of #DesingingChange!

"Every great design begins with an even better story." -- Lorinda Mamo

Our Marigold Bloom Quilt Throw represents what the marigold flower means to Anchal Project. It’s the flower that links our Stitch x Stitch program in Ajmer, India with our dyeScape program here in Louisville, KY.

In India, marigolds are used for all sorts of ceremonial occasions. They are often sold in mounds by street vendors, hung as garlands in homes, used in worship to decorate & honor shrines, placed around the neck of visitors as a sign of respect and protection and so much more. These flowers light up cities in India and it is absolutely spectacular.

Here in Louisville, we grow marigolds in our local garden to harvest for natural dyes as a part of our dyeScape program. We have dyed and crafted 100’s of pieces using this incredible flower.

The marigold is Anchal’s symbol of community - it binds our stories in hope.
