Also, if you're a classic car owner and want to bring your ride out for the occasion, we'd love to have you.

Please let me know in the comments if you can make it!

Lubbock’s Lowrider Art Show Returns With Chicano Culture, Custom Cars, Fashion and History Under One Roof

Lubbock’s First Friday Art Trail will get a strong dose of Chicano culture September 4 when the 2nd Annual Lowrider Art Show returns to Caviel Art Gallery and Museum.

The event runs from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. at 1719 Avenue A and will combine custom lowriders with original artwork, historical displays and a community fashion show.

Curator Fernando Elizdee Perez says the goal goes beyond displaying cars. The exhibit explores the history behind lowrider culture, including its roots in Mexican American neighborhoods, Pachucos and zoot suit culture, while showing how that history evolved across generations.

Visitors will also see artwork influenced by Maya and Mexica traditions, the Virgen de Guadalupe and other pieces reflecting different parts of Mexican American identity.

The Chicano Fashion Show also returns this year under the direction of Kimberly Perez, owner of Quirky Retro Boutique and founder of Hub City Rockabilly. Her work combines vintage Americana, Chicano influences and rockabilly culture, while encouraging members of the community to participate directly in the show.

Fernando Perez has spent the past several years helping reshape Caviel into a more interactive cultural destination where visitors are encouraged to participate instead of simply walking through exhibits.

The Lowrider Art Show is part of that larger vision, using cars, art, fashion and history to tell stories that remain deeply connected to Lubbock and the people who call it home.

Failure feels are real, and can be so overwhelming, couple that with imposter syndrome, colonization, and gatekeeping and that’s the perfect storm for anyone who creates or runs a business. I’ve had my fair share of ups and downs; still, there are times when just sit back and enjoy all my hard work, building up my skills and reputation in this community.

I fully believe that this is my season of unlimited possibilities and success!

I’m so proud to be a part of this community!

On the first Friday of September, visitors walking through the doors of Caviel Art Gallery & Museum won’t simply find paintings hanging on gallery walls or admire polished lowriders parked outside. They’ll step into a celebration of Chicano culture where art, fashion, history and community come ...
