Kids often create stories in their heads and thinking the divorce was their fault is very common amongst kids of divorce.

Something you can use as a convo
starter to better understand their
perception, thoughts and feelings is
“What do you think happened between
Mom and Dad?”

During the convo, keep it age appropriate and don’t speak badly of their parent.

Made to support coparented kids, this Home Sweet Homes journal supports kids mental health when used with their emotionally safe parents).

If coparents can work together, it travels with kids between homes but can also remain in one home between one parent and child in high conflict situations or when one parent is unwilling to participate.

Have the conversation. And let your child know that however they feel is okay and valid.

What we don’t know, we can’t help them with.

Something worth noting is that some kids rather write or draw out their feelings and thoughts. Giving them resources and tools to facilitate that is so important.

I created my coparenting journal, Home Sweet Homes as a resource to support our children. It supports them logistically and emotionally!

8 Things that make kids shut down emotionally:

1) Solving their problems too quickly
When kids share something hard, they often want understanding before solutions.
Instead of: “Just ignore them.”
Try: “That sounds really difficult.”

2) Asking too many questions
Rapid-fire questions can feel overwhelming. Sometimes kids need time before they can explain what they’re feeling.

3) Correcting their feelings
Instead of: “You’re overreacting.”
Try: “I can see why you’re upset.”
Validation builds trust.

4) Reacting too strongly
Big reactions can make kids regret and hold back from being honest. Calm responses keep communication open.

5) Turning every conversation into a lesson
Sometimes kids need comfort before advice. Connection first. Teaching second.

6) Dismissing “small” problems
What seems small to us can feel enormous to a child.

7) Only talking during problems
Build connection during ordinary moments too.

8) Interrupting or rushing
Kids often communicate slowly, especially when they’re overwhelmed.

Kids open up when they feel heard, understood, and emotionally safe.

Two changes I’ve made with my son are being more patient, that means giving him time, space, and waiting for him to respond (however that may be). And second, journaling with my son. Some kids express themselves more freely when the pressure to talk is removed. Writing and drawing is reflective and can feel easier for expression.

These are low effort, low cost, and low time commitment but captures what your child is doing and what they’re working on!

I do recommend getting a binder that has plastic sleeves to store your worksheets, photos, junk by month so you’re organized.

You won’t realize how much your child is holding until you give them a safe way to express themselves.

Our journal gives kids the space, permission, and freedom to share thoughts and feelings with their emotionally safe parent(s).

Use it across both homes when coparents can collaborate or keep it in one if it’ll not comfortable or it would be weaponized.

As a single mom owned business, thank you for your support ❤️

If you are looking for a tool that puts your coparented child’s needs first, this journal is for you. It can be used by coparenting dynamic. Use it across a child’s two homes when coparents feel comfortable sharing or keep it in one home if it feels unsafe, will be weaponized or the other household won’t participate. (Then you just journal in it while your child is away).

I created Home Sweet Homes journal because I couldn’t find any tools made to support them and their needs.
