Hot take:
Free People isn’t better than Amazon.
They’re both fast fashion.
And they’re both fueling the same broken system.
Different branding doesn’t mean different impact.
A higher price point doesn’t magically make exploitation disappear.
If a brand relies on massive production, overseas labor with little transparency, and disposable trends, it’s still part of the problem.
That said—not all fast fashion operates at the same level of harm.
And this is where we need to be honest.
SHEIN takes fast fashion and puts it on steroids.
Hundreds—sometimes thousands—of new styles every single day.
No brand produces at that scale. Not Free People. Not Amazon. Not H&M. Not even close.
That speed comes at a cost.
And it’s not just environmental.
SHEIN has been linked to Uyghur forced labor in China—
meaning real people, real families, and real suffering tied to clothing designed to be worn a few times and thrown away.
Fast fashion is bad across the board. Full stop.
But if there’s one brand to stop supporting—
one line to draw clearly and unapologetically—
It’s SHEIN.
You don’t have to shop perfectly.
You don’t have to throw out your entire closet.
But you do have a responsibility to pay attention and make better choices when you can.
