Safe to say Andy's parents enjoyed watching over the ducks and chicks this weekend! These guys got a fun new addition to their run. A hollow log to walk through and perch on. Also we have names for all the girls. Proper introductions will happen as the make their appearance on here.
1st picture: We have Betty Anne ( usually with her twin Mary Anne not pictured) and behind her is Charity (Blue Copper Marans)
2nd Pic: Perched on top is Tanis ( ) and Bonnie (Blue Copper Marans)
3rd Pic: is also Tanis
Can't wait to introduce you to all the girls! πŸ€ πŸ˜πŸ”πŸ“ @ Manchester, Michigan

The run and duck house really came together πŸ™Œ it's always a work in progress but the next step is to get running water in there. This will make winter chores a breeze! Also got it presentable just in time for the contest! @ Manchester, Michigan

Can you find the morels??

Such a good harvest this year. I truly think they taste so good because of the high satisfaction recieved when finding these little fungus treasure deep in the woods.

Good rule of thumb we learned this year is to pay attention to when the may apples bloom. Morels start to grow around the same time.

Sitting on the driveway catching up this morning with my Grandma, she goes to tell me that her and Aunt Betty were talking about how I'm not updating them enough since I haven't posted any pictures....

Well I apologize πŸ₯° πŸ˜‹ here is the latest update! I have to please my number 1 fans.

We are so close to getting the run for ducks and chickens closed in! We put the doors up last night and all we have left to do is put the chain link fence in the ground. I dug up a 12-15" deep trench around the parameter to keep predators from digging their way in. And the rest of the hardware cloth in the peaks. We are hoping to get a certificate of occupancy πŸ˜‚ for the ducks by Sunday!. I'll do a full video reveal when it is all done and cleaned up! @ Manchester, Michigan

You choose the people that surround you. πŸ–€ These girls offered to come down and made plans to help me on one of my current projects last week while I was still sleeping. Lol The run made good progress, but more importantly I had good company.

Now gotta work on getting you guys to move closer to me on this side of town

Just missing Michelle, she was gonna help too but hurt her ankle yesterday 😣

Also this is what your crew looks like 🀠

Introduced Ronan to the ducklings last night, at first he was little nervous. But I think he is slowly starting to warm up to them. Swipe to see! He eventually cracked a smile, and didn't think they were scary anymore. LOL. Now I gotta make sure my cat doesn't harm them πŸ˜…

Does anyone have success in making sure their cat doesn't bother their ducks and chickens. Or can they kind of protect themselves when they are older?

Happy Friday!
Today let's talk about radiant heat flooring. I wanted to share why we decided to go with radiant heat for our primary heat source in the barn. Some of the main features we like about radiant heat floors while it is a higher upfront cost, the efficiency year-over-year can save up to 30% on a utility bill. We also live in Southeast Michigan, so we have to deal with snowy and icy winter conditions. When we pull a vehicle into the barn, the floors will dry fast rather than create puddles everywhere. Another cool feature is we can have more control of where we want more heat. We installed 12 zones, 10 for inside the barn and 2 for our concrete pads outside. Say I am extra cold (usually the case) working in my room, I can turn up the heat in just my room.

Honestly, we are just so tickled at the idea of having a warm space to work in during those brutal winter days when things need to get done. We have spent the last five years working out of a makeshift garage-in-box tent. Having this beautiful space makes all the hard work SO πŸ‘ WORTH πŸ‘ IT! πŸ‘

"We are building a beautiful piece of property here. I can't wait to see what it looks like in 20 years."
Andy gave me a soft smile and responded, "You can see yourself here in 20 years?"
Me - "Why wouldn't I?"
He tells me that he wants me to be happy, and he would go wherever I am.

I am blessed to build our homestead with my best friend.

We are currently building our run for the ducks and chickies. Last night we got all the posts in, for the main foundation of the run. There are so many designs and inspirations, but we found one that looks like the best setup for us. With Andy's help, we got created a Sketchup drawing and then got to work. I can't wait to show all ya'll the final results.
Our flock will primarily be free-range. But when we close them up at night we want them to be safe. If you guys have any tips and tricks for keeping this predator-proof send them my way!

And I never thought I would say this... but this photo and the warm weather has me itching to get back out to the mill. We actually have a couple of logs in the queue ready to cut. These include ambrosia maple and some rustic cherry. I love the character a tree has when you see its inside beauty. It's amazing to think about thoughts applied to nature can also be applied to the people surrounding you. It truly is the beauty on the inside that counts. 🧑

What a perfect day to work outside! β˜€οΈ I think Storm would agree. I'm getting ready to plot out the chicken and duck run. They will free range but a run will be a nice enclosed space. I can't wait to show you what I've come up with. With the barn construction still in full swing, I don't want to pull Andy away, so I've hired my best friend .klein to help me. Luckily she will do anything if you pay her with cookie butter or wine or cookies or gummie bears. 😜
Gonna be some girl power over here this spring when we start building. (With the help of my dad but to relate with his daughters his stories always started "When I was a girl..." so he is basically a girl). πŸ˜… Looking forward to showing you the end results of this project.

Hey there! Hope everyone is having a great Thursday. Just one more day till the weekendπŸ™Œ I want share our plans with the big hole in the roof! One purpose this barn will serve us is a temporary living space when we are ready to start building our .Β  To better utilize this loft space, with little extra material we decided to build out shed-style dormer, swipe to see a sketch (no judgements on my sketch lol. at least it is not a napkin sketch) of what this will look like.Β  This dormer will also have a small balcony to overlook our creek which runs along with our property. Seriously can't wait to live in the barn and see little duckies below swimming in the creek. πŸ¦†πŸ¦†πŸ¦†
