Bessie Mae Textile & Remnants
(Remnant: a surviving trace of vestige)
I am proud to be a surviving trace of my Grandmother’s vestige. Both of them were very strong women, who were different in many ways, but the one thing they had in common was how much they loved their children and their grandchildren. Now that I have a grandson of my own, I pray that I can be for him, what they were for me.
My mama’s mother was Bessie and my daddy’s mother was Allie Mae. When I was born, they wanted me to be named “Bessie Mae”. Mama and Daddy did not agree, so they named me Lisa Loretta. I have wanted to have my own business for a very long time. So when I was thinking about the name of my business, “Bessie Mae” was born.
My Granny Allie Mae taught me how to sew, embroidery and crochet. When I was in the 6th grade, I was in 4H (showing my age now) – but I don’t care, I am a Granny now, yaaa !!! Okay, the project was to sew something. I can remember her at her kitchen table sewing the apron, that was my project. But the best memory I have is just being in her living room, in her little trailer, surrounded by all of her plants, with her up at the stove, making me a cup of tea. My Granny Allie Mae always made me feel special, like I could accomplish anything, no matter what.
I use to go down to spend the summers in Pensacola, Florida, with my Granny Bessie. I remember when I was little, we would go out to the beach, where we would stay all day with my family and Granny Bessie would bring all this food and grill all day long. Then we would go home and she would sq**rt me and my cousins down with the water hose. Most of all, I just loved talking with her. Getting up in the mornings with her and having tea. I still love my cup of tea. Granny Bessie had no problem letting you know what was on her mind. When I was trying to get pregnant with Dylan, she said, “Well, my girl, I will keep my fingers crossed and you just keep your legs open. And it worked!
I have also watched my Mama, with her grandchildren. She loves her children and grandchildren with ultimate, unconditional, love. I know she is in constant prayer for all of us. Her faith and love has carried me through a lot of stuff… I don’t show how much appreciate her, as much as I should, but I love her so much, and I am so glad she is able to be here to see my grandson, Charles Grey.
I pray with all of the wonderful grand mothering I have been blessed to experience, I can be the grandmother to Grey that they have shown with their grandchildren.
