Because I’m not from Marietta you might wonder why I am so taken with its history. The settling of Marietta is much more than a typical pioneer story. Like others in our new country, these settlers were brave, adventurous and did the backbreaking work of carving a town and surrounding homesteads from “untamed wilderness”. They overcame floods, early frosts, epidemics and resistance from Natives whose land they were occupying.

But unlike other pioneers, they set a crucial precedent. Their settlement, which began before America had a President or Constitution, championed the rights that would be included in that Constitution and one right that was not included: Freedom from Slavery. They fought for Ohio to enter the Union as a free state and won by the narrowest of margins. Later, other states like Ohio which were formed from the Northwest Territory – Indiana, Illinois, Michigan, Wisconsin, and Minnesota - followed suit. Had Ohio been a slave state, American History would have been very different.
