World Sea Turtle Week – Day 1: World Ocean Day

Today we celebrate World Ocean Day—the place our sea turtles call home.

The ocean covers more than 70% of our planet, produces much of the oxygen we breathe, helps regulate our climate, and is home to an incredible diversity of life. From the smallest plankton to the largest whales, every species is connected through this remarkable ecosystem.

For sea turtles, the ocean is more than a habitat—it’s their nursery, migration highway, feeding ground, and home.

Today is a reminder that every action matters. Whether you choose mineral based sunscreen, reduce single-use plastics, participate in a beach cleanup, support conservation organizations, or simply share your love for the ocean with others, you can make a difference.

A Rare Moment on Our Beach

A Kemp’s ridley sea turtle—the rarest sea turtle in the world—nested in Satellite Beach this week. An incredible and humbling reminder of how special our coastline truly is.

These turtles nest only a handful of times in Florida each year. To have one here matters.

As conversations continue about allowing dogs on our beaches, it’s important to remember: even well-behaved dogs can unintentionally disturb nesting turtles, nests, and shorebirds in these fragile ecosystems.

This isn’t about choosing sides—it’s about protecting what makes this place so extraordinary.
