Renamed Florida Memorial College in 1963, the school made its boldest move on November 11, 1968 — relocating from St. Augustine to its present home in Miami. A new city, the same mission. Today: Florida Memorial University, South Florida's only HBCU.

A new home by the sea. 🧡💙

St. Augustine, September 1918. Florida Baptist Academy left Jacksonville for a new campus and a new name: Florida Normal and Industrial Institute. Students raised the campus buildings with their own hands and grew their own food — the same self-made spirit that lives at Florida Memorial University today.

Born in a church basement. 🧡💙

Jacksonville, 1892. After violence forced a hard choice in Live Oak, Rev. Matthew Gilbert and others carried the mission forward and founded Florida Baptist Academy in the basement of Bethel Baptist Church — while the Live Oak institute kept its doors open. Two schools, one purpose. In 1941 they merged, setting the path to today's Florida Memorial University.
