Every year, on the third Sunday of June, we dedicate a day to honoring the men who have embraced the essential role of fatherhood. On this day, we also thank the fathers and father figures for the sacrifices they make, for embracing the responsibility of nurturing and raising children, and for their devotion to their family. This year, Father’s Day falls on June 19.
First, let’s look at the history of this holiday a little bit. Actually, the credit for the holiday is generally given to Sonora Smart Dodd of Spokane, Washington, whose father, a Civil War veteran, raised her and her five siblings after their mother died in childbirth. She is said to have had the idea in 1909 while listening to a sermon on Mother’s Day, which at the time was becoming established as a holiday. Local religious leaders supported the idea, and the first Father’s Day was celebrated on June 19, 1910, the month of the birthday of Dodd’s father.
Now that we’ve known the origin of the holiday, here are a few suggestions on how to make this day memorable for our main characters - the fathers:
𝐌𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐚 𝐡𝐨𝐦𝐞𝐲 𝐦𝐞𝐚𝐥
Whether it is a fancy three course meal or a simple dessert, just the fact that it’s made by you is touching enough. Put your heart, soul and the best ingredients into it, and watch his face light up. This is the sweetest way to end a long day, and is guaranteed to mark this day one of the most memorable Father’s Day.
𝐓𝐚𝐤𝐞 𝐚 𝐟𝐚𝐦𝐢𝐥𝐲 𝐫𝐨𝐚𝐝 𝐭𝐫𝐢𝐩
What better way to celebrate Father’s Day than taking a road trip with the whole family? Pile everyone into the car, crank up the tunes and take the scenic route. Whether your destination is the beach or your dad's favorite national park, this trip will definitely create a lasting memory.
𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐲𝐨𝐮𝐫 𝐤𝐚𝐫𝐚𝐨𝐤𝐞 𝐨𝐧
This one is one of our favorites, since it can be set up so easily. Crank up his favorite tunes, pass the mic, and watch him bring down the house with his serious karaoke skills. Bonus points if your dad busts out his dance moves while he's on stage a.k.a. your living room floor. This can even turn into a fun weekly tradition!
𝐆𝐞𝐭 𝐡𝐢𝐦 𝐚 𝐧𝐢𝐜𝐞 𝐩𝐫𝐞𝐬𝐞𝐧𝐭
Here’s the truth: Dads are hard to buy for, especially when they always insist they don’t need anything. However, it doesn’t mean that they will hate it if you buy them something nice. From my own personal experience, whatever I buy for my dad, he will cherish it and probably use it for the rest of his life. So, this is your sign to get your dad a nice present, and maybe even a hand - written card to make it extra special.
