His father took him to live with his brother in Niamey, which is the capital of Niger. Soumana’s father died when he was very young, and Soumana had to go to work to help support his family. After watching a friend doing leatherwork, he knew that this was his passion. He left school and went to the local co-op. He became an apprentice to the master leather craftsman. He worked as an apprentice for
five years before leaving Niger to go to The Ivory Coast to start his own workshop (atelier). Over the next three years there he was able to acquire enough funds to return to Niger and open his own workshop. Soumana’s business grew and he had six employees. They were doing most of the leather work for the leading designer in Africa, Alphadi. Soumana’s workshop was honored to manufacture the bags that Alphadi’s models carried on the runway for his first international fashion festival. Soumana spent many of the next years traveling all over the world, as he was invited to shows in Germany, Holland, England, and the United States. Soumana has been a resident of the United States since 2008. He began his leather business in the United States in 2010. Although the bags Soumana creates are a symbol of African art, he finds it a pleasure to create them in America. The differences that he has found in the creative process here in America are the quality of the products that he uses; including the leather, the hardware, the thread, and the machines. It’s all of a higher quality than that which he used Africa. Soumana is a master leather craftsman who takes pride in work and takes his job seriously. The reason he is so serious and passionate about his job is because he wants to create beautiful and stunning merchandise that is going to make his customers happy. He wants to create a product for them that is going to last a lifetime. When you order something from Soumana Saley, you don’t have to worry about what kind of product you are going to get. You can guarantee that you will get a quality product!
