I'm going to be honest...Indigenous Peoples Day makes me very uniquely sensitive and emotional. It usually starts the night before and it lasts until the following day. A mixture of emotions flows through me and trying to navigate them is like a ship on a roaring sea. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
I reflect very intensely on my ancestors today. I cannot imagine what they’ve gone through. I can’t begin to grasp the kind of turmoil, anguish, and pain felt when they had to watch their loved ones disappear or when they faced death or assimilation (and oftentimes, both). My own pain is nothing in comparison to this, but within my DNA I can somehow feel theirs. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Then there is this intense, glistening fierce energy. One that waits and observes until it's time to come out. It's calm but moves mountains. It names itself, Resilence. ⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
In this photo, there is my great-grandfather, Chief Aukewenzie, and my grandmother (his great-granddaughter Mary). I reflect on these two a lot. Not just on today, but many days. Our ancestors are with us not only in a spiritual way, but in our DNA as well. Their memories pass down onto us. Their experiences pass down onto us. Our lineage is everything. That is why Indigenous people think about the children in everything they do because they have always understood what physics is now proving.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀

My son and I have been through some powerful times in the last few months. At this moment, we are playing and taking a moment to be goofy together.
