Finished this glorious red halo crown a few days ago. Completely hand stitched in red sinamay with loops and bits of red veiling. A lovely accessory you can wear year round!

Took a post-Derby break but just can’t stay away from my studio long! I’ve completed a few hats, and have two more in progress. About to stitch the crown onto the brim of this ivory hat. I love a clean palette!

I forgot to show you the completed navy blue fascinator after that “in progress pin-up” I posted the other day. Again, completely hand-crafted, hand stitched, and professionally finished. I love sculpting with abaca!

Adding to my spring and summer collection, this little fascinator in lime green sinamay is completely handcrafted and hand stitched. I wired pink satin flowers together, and bound the stems with lime green satin ribbon. I curled an ostrich quill, and bound it in the same ribbon. Finished the inside with green satin and cute polkadot grosgrain. This was so much fun to make!

It’s rainy and gloomy outside, but a great day in the studio. Our academy leader did a live reel with us this afternoon with tips about the silhouette of a creation, so I was inspired to play with this shimmery navy abaca, and sculpt it into swirls and twists, creating interesting silhouettes from different sides.
Pinning in place helps me determine angles and shape before I sew it onto the navy fascinator I made. Hope to finish this over the weekend.
Amusing that the music I was listening to on Pandora sounded like swirls and twirls!

A few weeks ago, in the middle of Derby orders, I also presented at a luncheon at The Reserve at Fairhope, educating the ladies on the art of millinery, and the process of hat making.

Longtime friend, Leigh Parks, Senior Vice President of Morgan Stanley Five Rivers Group, invited me to be a speaker at a gathering of their female clients. Wonderful group of women, I so enjoyed telling them about my journey as a milliner and business owner, and showing them a few hats. Thanks, Leigh!

This happens often:
Someone wants a hat that looks like this found on Etsy, but they don't want to pay the Etsy price of $620, because they have a $150 budget for a hat.
Please understand, #1 - I will not recreate another milliner's work, #2 - I cannot even do something similiar for $150. I’d charge between $525 - $575 (not including tax) for something this size with those materials.
A hat like this may take anywhere from 2 - 4 weeks to make, depending on what materials have to be ordered. It takes hours and hours of hands-on work. I know all this "behind the scenes" stuff doesn't matter - all they see is the end result.
Sigh. The ups and downs of being an artist. 🫤

The ladies and I had a lovely time at the tea party event, “Hatitude”, at the MMOA. There was also a presentation on the famous Mobile milliner, Susie Mae Pugh-Williams’, hats that are currently on exhibit here through the summer.
