What can we learn when we connect genomics with metabolomics?

We’re back with Dr. Russell P. Bowler for this week’s 🎥 Friday Feature: On-Demand Webinars 🎥.

In this clip from our Decoding the Exposome webinar series, Dr. Bowler explores how combining genetic and metabolomic data can reveal associations between genetic variants and individual metabolites, and help researchers investigate how those relationships influence metabolic risk.

Explore the full webinar to learn how Dr. Bowler is using metabolomics and multiomics to investigate COPD, environmental exposures, metabolic aging, and disease risk.

🦠 Virus reactivation in acute and long COVID-19

New research published in Nature found frequent reactivation of chronic viruses including EBV, CMV, HSV1 and Anelloviridae in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Importantly, reactivation wasn't limited to immunosuppressed patients.

By integrating metabolomics with transcriptomics, proteomics and immune profiling, researchers were able to look beyond viral activity itself and uncover the broader biological response.

Distinct metabolic signatures emerged, including changes in amino acid and lipid metabolism, connecting viral reactivation with downstream functional biology.

Global health research, particularly for women and infants, comes from populations in high-income countries. That leaves important gaps in understanding, particularly on how environmental exposures shape health across diverse populations.

That's why today we’re proud to announce the successful completion of multiple global health pilot projects funded by the Gates Foundation, advancing research into conditions that disproportionately affect women and infants in low- and middle-income countries.

These projects show how metabolomics, combined with accessible sample collection methods such as dried blood spots, can help bring high-quality biochemistry profiling to more populations and real-world settings.

Better representation means better biology and, ultimately, better opportunities to improve health outcomes worldwide.

Could the microbiome become a drug target?

We’re back with Professor Fredrik Bäckhed for this week’s 🎥 Friday Feature: On-Demand Webinars 🎥.

In this clip from our Decoding the Exposome webinar series, Professor Bäckhed explores an intriguing possibility: rather than targeting the microbiota itself, could we target the microbial enzymes responsible for producing metabolites that may contribute to disease?

Using imidazole propionate as an example, he discusses how this approach could open new possibilities for treating cardiometabolic diseases.

Explore the full webinar to learn more about how Professor Bäckhed’s team is using metabolomics to uncover connections between the gut microbiome, metabolites, impaired glucose control, and cardiometabolic health.

What can the metabolome tell us about the relationship between nutrition and biological aging?

We’re back with Dr. Jessica Lasky-Su for this week’s 🎥 Friday Feature: On-Demand Webinars 🎥.

In this clip from our Decoding the Exposome webinar series, Dr. Lasky-Su discusses how metabolomics can capture nutritional signatures and help researchers explore their relationship with biological aging.

Her team found strong associations between dietary patterns identified in the metabolome and the rate of aging, highlighting how metabolomics can help us understand the connection between what we eat and how we age.

Explore the full webinar to learn more about how Dr. Lasky-Su and her team are combining metabolomics with other omics and clinical data to advance our understanding of biological aging and precision medicine.

Welcome back to our Women in STEM: Leading the Way in Multiomics series, where we're highlighting the women helping advance multiomics across science, strategy, operations, and translational research.

Today, we feature Dr. Christine Nnyamah, Field Metabolomics Scientist at Metabolon.

As Christine explains, metabolomics helps connect molecular information with what is actually happening in the biological system—providing the functional context needed to understand treatment response, disease mechanisms, and patient variability.

From exploring systems-level responses to GLP-1 therapies to strengthening biomarker and patient-stratification strategies, Christine highlights how metabolomics can help move discoveries beyond the lab and closer to medicine.

Welcome back to 🎥 Friday Feature: On-Demand Webinars 🎥, where we're sharing memorable moments from our Decoding the Exposome webinar series.

This week is a little different.

Rather than highlighting a specific scientific insight, we're sharing two moments that meant a lot to our team.

In the first, Dr. Dorrain Lowe explains why Metabolon's extensive chemical library gave her team confidence in metabolite identification.

In the second, Professor John Chambers reflects on nearly five years of collaboration with Metabolon, describing it as "a very rewarding experience" and praising the professionalism of the team and the quality of the data.

To our collaborators, and to everyone who has trusted us with their research, thank you. We're proud to support the discoveries you're making.
