Take a drive through your town.
Look at every storefront.
Think about your favorite coffee shop, boutique, restaurant, salon, repair shop, florist, or farm store.
Now think about who's behind those doors.
It's probably someone you know.
Your neighbor.
Your cousin.
Your kid's coach.
A friend from high school.
The family you've known your entire life.
In small towns, we don't just have businesses, we have people brave enough to bet on our community.
Here in Ringgold County, with fewer than 5,000 people, nearly every small business has a familiar face behind it. These aren't big corporations. They're our neighbors working long hours, taking risks, and pouring everything they have into keeping our communities alive.
I know we're all tired of hearing, "Shop Local." And this isn’t meant to “guilt trip” you.
I know it's not always the cheapest option or even the most convenient. You can’t online shop their inventory at 9PM while you bed rot. Or run in at any time of day because maybe that business has to be selective on the hours they’re open.
But here's what I wish more people understood...
When you spend money at a locally owned business, that money doesn't leave town.
It pays your neighbor's employees.
It gets spent at another local business.
It helps sponsor your kids' sports teams.
It supports school fundraisers, community events, nonprofits, and local projects.
It pays local property taxes that help fund the services we all use.
It keeps our buildings occupied instead of empty.
Your dollar doesn't stop after one purchase, it continues moving through your community, supporting the people who call this place home.
That's something a big-box store or an online retailer can never do.
Small businesses don't just sell products.
They create jobs.
They sponsor the festivals.
They donate the gift baskets.
They volunteer on boards.
They coach your kids.
They invest in the community because they're part of the community.
If we stop supporting them, we won't just lose stores.
We'll lose the people and places that make our towns worth calling home.
So the next time you have a choice, remember...
You're not just buying a product.
You're choosing where your money lives.
And if we want our small towns to thrive tomorrow, we have to invest in them today. ❤️
