Today, I would like to share my current Bridal gown alteration story. A lovely Bride, I'll call her Sandra, bought her "sample" Wedding gown and the last thing the Stylist said to her was, "Wow, you won't need any alterations on your gown!!!!"
Firstly, a sample gown has usually been tried on by numerous other Brides-to-be. Some potential brides fit into the gown perfectly, others had to squeeze into this gown, ripping out the now damaged zipper that needs replaced or repaired. The zipper was broken when Sandra tried it on but the Stylist who was so helpful to Sandra did not mention it. Also, there was a tear in the fabric and 2 very noticeable 3"-4" horizontal snags to the right and left of the zipper. When I repaired the zipper for Sandra, she discovered the gown was too snugcwhen trying it on. This was after she lost 10 pounds from the time she purchased her gown and tried it on after repairing the zipper. In other words, because the zipper was broken when she purchased the gown (that needed no alterations) the very tight fitting gown was now too small!
The low back of Sandra's sample gown had other costly alterations as well! Because there were no hooks/eyes on the gown, the 6 loops and buttons at the top of the zipper were broken and stretched out and needed replaced. There was also a very noticeable hole in the power mesh in the back near the loops. To tepair the power mesh, the lace had to be very gently removed which was very time consuming, a matching color of power mesh located, the damaged mesh cut out and replaced, and the lace sewn back on. The buttons for the loops, as well as on the train were very loose and some were missing. Each at the 6 buttons for the loops needed to be removed and sewn on individually to ensure they looked there best! The buttons on the train were tied off and new ones sewn on. The lace around the train looked very used and frayed. Some pieces needed to be rebuilt or reconstructed by hand. Then, the gown was soiled and needed cleaned. Cost 175.00. All of this for a gown that "needed no alterations."
After all the repairs, I began to redesign Sandra's gown and alter it to her wishes. Sandra chose the PERFECT Wedding gown for her body shape and she looks stunning in it and I am happy I could help make her Dream gown come true!
BEWARE OF BUYING THE PERFECT SAMPLE WEDDING GOWN and listening to Stylists who say, "That won't cost very much to alter" or
"It fits you perfectly and you will not need alterations."
Sandra's gown was 4" too long! Her straps caused deep, red welts when she wore it for a half hour. Sandra had me design new ones. Lace was coming off the hip. Lace all over the gown was frayed and needed to be trimmed. Lace at hem had extensive repair due to unraveling and fraying.
