Village Surf Shoppe opened on Atlantic Avenue in 1969 ..... and 57 years later, it is still in the same building. That makes it the oldest surf shop on the Grand Strand, and one of the oldest in the country. Same walls. Same oak trees. Same stoke.
Eric Eason grew up right here in Murrells Inlet, SC ( Garden City, SC ) , on Atlantic Ave. When he opened the shop, Garden City was a quieter stretch of sand and the local surf scene was just finding its feet. He would drive to Florida, load boards into a truck, and bring them home to sell. That little shop became the heartbeat of East Coast surf on this end of the Strand.

In 1988, the torch passed to a kid who had already fallen hard for these waves. Kelly Richards moved from landlocked Arkansas to the Murrells Inlet area as a boy, started repairing boards for Eric at 14, and stayed when his family went back home. He bought the shop in 1988. The Richards family has been here ever since, now with partner Brian Campbell.
Kelly still shapes boards the old-fashioned way ( pencil, templates, hand plane ) under the Perfection label. Those boards have carried more East Coast titles than just about any other. One of them carried his son, Cam Richards, through a perfect 10 at Pipeline in Hawaii. A Garden City board. Shaped here. On one of the heaviest waves on Earth. That’s how a small shop on Atlantic Avenue put our community on the world surf map.

Walk inside and it feels like a time machine. Brick arches. Boards old and new. Memorabilia from Eric, Kelly, and a lineup of local legends. Grandparents who bought their first boards here now come back for their grandkids. The building has stood through Hugo, Florence, Matthew, Floyd, and Ian. The waves keep coming. So does Village.
This is the real deal... not a chain beach store. Custom boards, surf lessons, rentals, camps, paddle boards, and people who actually surf the water they’re talking about.
