During the 1940s, severe leather shortages and rationing were enforced due to World War II. To conserve larger cuts of leather, bootmakers began producing boots with significantly shorter shafts thus creating the PeeWee.

By the 1950s, Peewees evolved from a resourceful wartime necessity into a flamboyant fashion statement. They were beloved by women and Hollywood stars, representing an iconic, flashy era of Western flair…. And you know we love Western flair here at Bowen.

Cayden has a true eye for western filigree—just take a look at his work. We wanted to bring that same artistry into his boots while making sure they were built to be worn every day, not just admired from a shelf.

To give them that lived-in character from day one, we distressed them ourselves.

Custom scarred cowhide, hand-tooled filigree, and a stonewashed finish—these boots are made for whatever comes next. Whether Cayden is tattooing clients or jumping out of planes, they’ll be ready for the adventure.

If you caught our previous post, you read the story of Mrs. Kathleen. She entrusted us with a meaningful pair, allowing us to transform cherished memories into something she could carry forward every day.

We carefully repurposed the mahogany and black ostrich hide from the loafers, incorporating it into the wingtip, heel cap, and pull straps of these custom boots. Paired with tan ostrich leather and finished with hand-applied buck stitch lacing, the result is a one-of-a-kind heirloom that honors her husband’s legacy while creating a new chapter in her story.

More than just a pair of boots, they are a lasting tribute—crafted to keep treasured memories close with every step.

Every stitch tells a story, but some projects carry a legacy that deserves to live on.

Mrs. Kathleen came to us with a pair of her late husband’s loafers—shoes that carried years of memories, milestones, and moments that can never be replaced. Rather than letting those memories sit on a shelf, we carefully deconstructed the loafers and incorporated their material into a brand-new pair of custom boots made just for her.

I built myself a pair just like these years ago. They were my everyday boots—until I left them under a hotel bed in Florence while rushing to catch a train to Milan.

I was bitter so I never remade them… until now.

Bowen Zip in Mahogany Moose with a Gold Zip and Snip Toe.
