Behind The Song: “Every element of progress in this country has come from the brave, sustained work of dedicated activists who saw an injustice and sought to right it. From civil rights leaders to suffragettes to gay rights advocates, we owe the good changes in America to visionaries who fought for a better way. And in contrast, there are always those forces in America who, motivated by fear or bigotry, selfishness or closed-mindedness, have sought to stymie equality and a level path to pursuing happiness. I started writing “Only In America” as I watched President Barack Obama fight against the corrupt, cynical efforts of Mitch McConnell. Ideas that shouldn’t be remotely controversial — healthcare for those with pre-existing conditions, regulating an out-of-control Wall Street, women’s rights, Supreme Court justices who would affirm gay marriage — were all major battles with the regressive forces of this country. I finished writing “Only In America” during the presidency of Donald Trump, a man who represents the distillation of fear-mongering, deceitful leadership — gaslighting about the merits of a bygone era where women and minorities were considered lesser citizens. I love this country because our founders put the power to shape it in our hands and brave individuals — many of whom first had to fight for recognition of their personhood — have stood up all along our history to make sure ALL people here have that power. But we have to keep fighting to make America better. All of us. Because this is our home. And the values we put into policy and the thriving of all of our citizens is a reflection and a judgment on us all.” - Ian

Whooooaaaa it’s really real!!! The first single “Show Yourself” from my upcoming album is officially out in the world today! To celebrate I’m going to go live on Instagram from our concert in Karlsruhe Germany at 2pm CST, chat w y’all and perform the song! Join us!

I wanted to share a little about where the song came from w you all. It’s one of the most personal songs I’ve ever written, about something that was very difficult for me to articulate for a long time.

I grew up learning to hide. As a minority growing up in the US, I learned to assimilate to white culture. My sister and I were taught to blend in, speak English, and downplay our Asian-ness.
I learned to keep my head down, keep myself small, and not to make waves. I learned that sticking out and drawing too much attention to yourself was selfish.
I learned that if I just did everything correctly, the way I was supposed to, I would be safe... From the pain of judgement, shame, and feeling exposed.

This held me back from releasing music for years. I was so terrified of people’s judgement, of it not being perfect, that I would make all kinds of excuses why I couldn’t start... I was too busy, I was too broke... one time I herniated a disc in my back during the sessions so I couldn’t physically work on my album.

I was keeping myself hidden in order to avoid feeling pain... but staying invisible was causing me to hurt in a different way. I was stuck in my hiding place.

This song mirrors my (ongoing) journey of learning to come out from that place, stand in my space and to let myself be truly seen in the world.
