48 Hours of Retirement

Well, it’s over. Retirement, that is. But I packed scrumptious dinners, late night desserts, hotel lounges, leftover wedding flowers, cocktails with funny names, new clothes and a box of crayons for my “first day of school”, walks among caladiums that looked like hearts and potted ferns that looked like trees, naps, long coffee mornings, and deep sleeps into those 48 hours. It was surreal. But, it’s over.

I start my new career journey in the morning.

And I can’t wait to get started. ❤️

A Door Opened…

…and I’ll walk through it. Late in the work day last Tuesday, July 7, I did this really big thing for me. I submitted my resignation, effective July 24. This will end just shy of a 26.5 year career at the Tennessee Highway Safety Office through a federal grant with the Center for Transportation Research, University of Tennessee Knoxville. A young 29 year old will depart as a well worn 56 year old. As I privately walked the last six months of conversations and deliberations on a most wonderful opportunity, I kept my circle very tight as I weighed the decision. I’ve been most thorough in planning my next chapter. Most, if not all, did not see this coming.

It has been bittersweet for sure. How do you properly say farewell to people you truly do love, to a place where you have worked almost half your life, to a period of your life where you have seen some of your greatest achievements and deepest personal pain, and where you are truly at the top of your game? Because it’s time. It is just time.

Why this pic? It’s from Tuesday of this week as I made one final trip to Knoxville to CTR. It had been on the calendar for a long time but seemed almost like perfect timing for a last goodbye to this part of my work family. I’ve been on that elevator many times over a quarter century. And it has nice lighting and lots of windows for good pics. 😉

More on my shift into the private sector in later posts. My region is my beloved Tennessee and I’ll continue living in Fayetteville for now. And it is a beautiful opportunity that allows me to reconnect with a favorite person and continue to invest in this amazing state in a different way.

Leaving on your terms on good terms after a long term is an indescribable feeling. I am forever changed by my time at the THSO because of…people.

Choo Choo train 🚂 While she still needs a major infusion of cash for renovations, she is still lovely. The Choo Choo is a gigantic campus with cavernous spaces. The greatest potential is there. I trust it will one day rise to its glorious opportunity.

Ms. Janis and Apple Pie

Now I said, “Lord, I need something sweet” on a Saturday afternoon in late June in Huntsville. And He delivered. 😁 JJ’s Treats Page is a cute little building tucked away and houses one of the most SCRUMPDILIUMPTIOUS apple pies. Not that that’s all I bought. There is a wonderful assortment and not just pastries!

Thank you, Ms. Janis, for being so uplifting. I so enjoyed hearing your journey. We even had connections through our churches!

She even has a cute little barbecue place next door. Please stop by and visit her sometime…soon!

July 4th Eve Evening…🇺🇸

Perfect timing brought decades’ long Nashville friends together in Chattanooga to spend an absolute blissful evening. We celebrated Jason White’s 55th birthday and will have major pool time at Jessica’s today. The Murder Burger at Lo Main seems to be the reigning fav. I certainly inhaled mine.

A real gift to see these folks: Robin, Jason, Tom, Jennifer, Eric, Angela, Suzanne, and Jessica. We definitely missed the rest of the gang.
