In Once Upon a Mattress, Queen Aggravain is a vain, aggravating, self-absorbed character. To reflect these character qualities, we created The Peacock Gown. Collaborating with Costume Lead Beth Murphy, Director Devon Zukowski and performer Naomi Tulp, we embued this gown with historical elements, texture, elegance, and ostentation.

Costume Lead Beth Murphy asked me to create the gorgeous pageantry of Queen Aggravain for Coll Street Players' production of Once Upon a Mattress. Knowing Beth's pursuit of excellence and the outrageous character of Queen Aggravain, I said yes to the dress(es). Collaborating with Beth Murphy, Director Devon Zukowski and actress Naomi Tulp, we stretched our imaginations and our skills!

Part 3 of the Nightingale build! 🪶

This time we're focusing on the subtle feather details that help bring the Nightingale of Samarkand to life in Once Upon a Mattress. Inspired by Chappell Roan's iconic jester look—designed by James Nguyen and Alexander Cole (AC Gottlieb) and built by Arel Studio NYC—we used textured ribbons in our color palette to create the illusion of feathers.

This was an intensive and rewarding project for MelRae, Chloe, and Caleb, who poured their creativity and craftsmanship into every detail while collaborating on this build for director Devon Zukowski. It's incredible how thoughtful design choices—like subtle feather-inspired textures—can completely transform a costume and bring a character to life on stage. 🪶✨

Before we could even start sewing the bodice for The Nightingale of Samarkand in Once Upon a Mattress, we had to make our own fabric.

Inspired by Chappell Roan's iconic jester look—designed by James Nguyen and Alexander Cole (AC Gottlieb) and brought to life by Arel Studio NYC—we hand-wove ribbons together to create a custom textile. Every strip was woven into place before a single bodice seam was sewn.

It was a time-intensive process, but it gave the costume the bold texture, color, and one-of-a-kind look we were after. Keep reading to see how it all comes together! 🎭✨

We've completed a LOT of LED panel installations, but this is the first time we installed a panel wall into a rotating platform! This project is 100% a collaborative effort, and it was a privilege to work with such an innovative team. Once Upon a Mattress takes place in numerous locations around a castle, and requires a towering bed with a stack of twenty mattresses. Our rotating platform hid the bed on one side, and allowed projections on the flip side.

In Once Upon a Mattress, the key character Prince Dauntless matures from a grown-up boy into a man. We strove to support this character growth through his costumes. His first outfit was baby blue with overtly childish elements. Costume Lead Beth Murphy cast the vision and together we made two copies of the costume - one for Prince Dauntless and one for Lady Larken.

We created an outfit with a baby bubble feel to it, including a ruffled collar, muffin cap, wrist cuffs and jeweled belt.

In Once Upon a Mattress, Lady Larken says, "Well, remember! We're all here to do a job and your job is just as important as anyone else's." We agree with Lady Larken's kind words, and believe that hard working maids deserve royal touches on their costume also! Early in the show process, I worked with the director Devon Zukowski and costume lead Beth Murphy to establish a royal crest which we used in sets, costumes, and props. For our maids, we set the crest into laurel leaves and embroidered the bottom of the apron.

It's day two of summer, and we are off to a great start! Caleb spent a few productive hours building a heavy-duty wooden shoe rack to get his closet organized. He is also more than sixty hours in to a big 3d printing project, with many more hours to go!
