Big Easy Film Festival / New Orleans / Booklet / Deck of Cards / Package Design

For this project I decided to think outside of the box for the design of a program that would be given out to attendees of the Big Easy Film Festival. As my chosen director was Charlie Chaplin (a famed director/actor from the mid
20th century) and his film “The Great Dictator” I decided to create a program that would be formatted like a deck of
cards (an item that was very popular by soldiers in World Wars - a war that “The Great Dictator” comically references). I chose to utilize a black and white monochromatic color scheme as Chaplin’s films all were produced in black and white
and then illustrated and designed in a minimalist fashion to exhibit the popular design style enjoyed by modern culture. The cards in the event program each have an symbol illustrated for them that represents the signified film being presented at the Big Easy Film Festival - similar to how each card in a traditional deck is given a symbol (hearts, clubs, diamonds, or spades). Further the letter that appears in the upper left hand corner of the cover of the card is the first
letter of each directors name while the letter that appears in the lower right hand corner of the cover of the card is the
first letter of the film being presented at the festival. I decided to illustrate the main character(s) of the film being
showcased along with the face of the director(s) correspondingly to how the images would appear on face cards in a traditional deck.

Northside Storage was started with the mission to create “first class” and “top notch” storage units to hold all your belongings or prized possessions.
In the spirit of “first class storage,” the new logo looks to recall the message of “beautiful industrialization” as spread by the Bauhaus School of Design. In drawing inspiration from the Bauhaus, the new logo begins by taking a font digitally rendered from Bauhaus instructor Joschmi Schmidt’s stencil alphabet. Then the letter “N” tops the letter “S” to create a modern, clean, crisp, unique, and attractive logo that’ll create a recognizable corporate identity that reinforces Northside Storage’s mission for “first class” storage units. The following pages were taken from the Brand Guide Book I put together for the starge company.

A Privileged White Man Explains Privilege to Privileged White Men / Moorhead, MN / Booklet

On the night of October 31, a second year of posters that state, “IT’S OK TO BE WHITE” were being posted illegally around Concordia’s campus. While it may sound like such a simple and harmless slogan, the message behind the posters carry a deeper message filled with hate and a racist agenda. Thus, I felt the need to write and design this short book so as to educate those who might be confused or not understand the significance of their defense of the poster. The book highlights the recent poster incident as well as comments and responses to the incident. I have redacted names so as to not infringe on people’s individual right to privacy, but to bring to life the true narratives that are being held at this moment in time.

This book also takes a brief look into “white privilege” so as NOT to shame or make white people hate themselves, but rather to start a constructive dialogue towards understanding the advantages garnered by white people because of the color of their skin. This book will highlight various racial inequalities that still exist because of systemic racism in today’s society. The intention of this effort is not to rub in the face of minorities a reality that seems ever-present to so many, but rather, to bring to light a truth and heightened sensitivity for those who may not be aware.

My hope for this narrative is to educate white men on the deeper meaning behind the posters, to give white people a better understanding of white privilege, to foster discussion and conversation between friends and acquaintances on a topic that many may want to sweep under the rug, and to help create agents of positive change.

Mansplaining – to “explain something to a woman in a condescending way that assumes she has no knowledge about the topic.” This term recently emerged in our lexicon, but the act of mansplaining has haunted women since men have been in power. In this book, I look at the dangerous effects that mansplaining has had on women and our society as a whole and ways in which men can help stop mansplaining and work toward gender equity.
