Fort Makers

Fort Makers "We fort." Fort Makers is an artist collective that makes functional and interactive art.

We create large-scale public art installations, as well as a wide variety of fashion and home products. Each piece reflects the unique hand of the artist and the energy and inspiration of the group. The vast array of objects we’ve made is a reflection of our overall goal; we aim to create a three-dimensional and cohesive, visual world.

Created by Shino Takeda () for Fort Makers’ GREEN HOUSE series, this large scale ceramic planter is designed to hold and sustain living form.

Gas fired and layered with painterly surface and shifting color, each piece considers the relationship between vessel and plant. One fixed and formed, the other growing and unpredictable, brought together in a single composition.

Handcrafted by Jason Bauer () and Romina Gonzales (), this substantial glass vessel brings unexpected movement to the table.

Inspired by ancient ceramic footing, its subtly tilted base catches the eye while thick, clear glass gives it weight and presence. Designed to hold what you need it to, or to stand alone.

Handcrafted from jet cut aluminum and finished in matte black lacquer, these sconces bring soft, dimensional light to the wall.

Inspired by playful forms found in nature and the cosmos, each shape is backlit with a warm, dimmable LED glow that creates depth without overpowering the room. Lightweight with a distinct silhouette, they shift the atmosphere with ease.

Bright, hairy, and maybe a little alive. These sculptural ottomans by Tamika Rivera () have a mind of their own or at least a lot of personality.

Each one is hand-knotted, wrapped, and stuffed into soft, creature-like forms. Think furniture meets fantasy with a pop of yarn and a wink.

For this edition of “Fort Visits,” we spent time with artist Maisie Broome (), whose dreamlike practice drifts between textiles, sculpture, printmaking, and performance.

Raised among fairies, spirits, and sea swans on an island in Maine—and now based in Queens—Maisie’s world-building feels both grounded and otherworldly. Her marbled prints and sewn works echo motherhood, magic, and memory, often taking shape through intuition and chance.

Swipe through for a glimpse into Maisie’s multidimensional process and a few of her favorite stories.

Vintage camping blankets, reimagined as bold textile paintings.

Under her Blanket Project, Naomi Clark () transforms found wool and cotton throws — sourced from eBay, flea markets, and garage sales — using a process she calls “painting with fabric.” Dyeing, cutting, appliqué, and embroidery turn each one into a vibrant, one-of-a-kind composition.
